Indonesian dies in yet another Camerons landslide

(Rakyat Post) – A Cameron Highlands landslide claimed yet another life as police, last night, recovered the body of an Indonesian man trapped, this time involving a workers’ quarters.

The district’s police chief DSP Wan Zahari Wan Busu said the man identified as M. Sainul, 29, was found at almost 12am last night after hours of rescue effort.

He was believed to have been trapped inside a house at a vegetable farm in Jalan Desa Corina, Kampung Raja during the 5.30pm landslide.

“We did what we could but we couldn’t save him. The post-mortem will be conducted today and we are patiently waiting to find out what had caused his death,” said Wan Zahari.

He added that the deceased had worked as a contractor there for one and a half years, and had no relatives besides his brother who was also working in the Highlands.

The landslide which killed Sainul was the second of the day as early yesterday morning, a similar incident in Tringkap, Cameron Highlands had caused the death of a pregnant woman and her one-year-old child.

Barely two months ago, five people were killed when the Highlands experienced a massive mud floods and landslides, said to be caused by the area’s environmental degradation from years of uncontrolled illegal loggings and land clearings.

The Nov 5 tragedy also saw 203 people from the areas of Kampung Baru and Bertam Valley forced to leave their homes.
