PAS and Umno have shown their willingness to set aside their political differences for a common cause, as seen in their joint effort to help the Kelantan flood victims, according to Umno mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia.

The paper today published a report of its interview with PAS Central Working Committee member Nik Mohamad Abduh Abdul Aziz, in which the latter was quoted as saying that cooperation between the two parties was established with the setting up of the Kelantan Flood Disaster Committee on December 26.

“We at the party level are also finding ways to enhance cooperation between the two parties,” Nik Abduh reportedly said. “I see politics as a small issue. I believe the people of Kelantan or even the whole country would agree the flood problems are beyond political boundaries.”

Utusan also reported that two Umno supreme council members – Asyraf Wajdi Dusuk and Mohd Puad Zarkashi – had called on Umno and PAS to use their cooperation in disaster management as a launching pad for political cooperation in the interest of the Muslim community.

Asyraf was quoted as saying that the two parties needed to look at the floods as a message from God that relations between Muslims must be repaired.

He described the joint committee as the “silver lining” appearing amidst the political acrimony between the two parties.

“This bridge should be strengthened, especially after the floods,” he reportedly said.
