Umno man mulls leaving ‘stupid’ party over 1MDB
(TMI) – “Saying that I lodged a false report is a seditious remark. Did he see the police report I lodged, what information I gave to the police in Bukit Aman?”
Umno’s Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who has come under severe criticism for lodging a report against debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), said he might leave the party because of the attacks against him.
Calling the party “stupid”, the Batu Kawan Umno deputy division head said condemning him for the 1MDB report had backfired on his critics.
“They have done all kinds of character assassination against me, but I just want to tell them that they are very stupid.
“It has backfired against them like hell now,” he told reporters before lodging a report against 1MDB with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today in Putrajaya.
“The people are more sympathetic towards me at the moment.”
Khairuddin, who said he had been an Umno member for at least 20 years, said he needed more time to consider whether or not he would leave the party.
“I am considering the matter. Give me time. I will look into it seriously,” he said.
Khairuddin has become unpopular at home since lodging the police report against the debt-ridden 1MDB – Malaysia’s second sovereign wealth fund after Khazanah Nasional Bhd – which was Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s brainchild.
He has been accused of being backed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was also a strong critic of Najib and 1MDB.
