Selangor Pakatan reps insist against Kidex, Dash but get cold shoulder treatment (VIDEO)
(Malay Mail Online) – Selangor lawmakers from the state ruling Pakatan Rakyat (PR) bloc were today snubbed by residents protesting against the construction of two major highways in their backyards.
Despite turning up to support the rally attended by some 400 residents in Malaysia’s most developed state, the handful federal and state lawmakers that included Tony Pua, Gobind Singh Deo and Yeo Bee Yin were barred by the organisers from addressing the crowd.
The elected representatives had to wait till after the group dispersed, and held an impromptu news conference after the rally ended.
Pua, who is Petaling Jaya Utara MP, defended the PR state government which has been receiving a lot of heat from residents over the proposed Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) and Damansara-Shah Alam Expressway (Dash).
“You do not want a government that acts on its whims and fancies. We can act on the whims and fancies and just reject it outright without basis today. We can do that for other decisions as well,” he told reporters at Dataran Petaling Jaya here.
The DAP federal lawmaker said the state government as the regulator, was in a bind as it must act fairly and be seen to do so.
He stressed that the state needed to follow procedures and study the federal government’s proposal for the highways instead of just rejecting them outright.
He added that the highway project developers too had to comply with state regulations, failing which the highways would not be built.
