Kit Siang: Umno-PAS Unity Govt conspiracy against Pakatan
DAP veteran calls for Eight-Year PR Roadmap to save Opposition Alliance from disintegration.
(Free Malaysia Today) – DAP elder statesman Lim Kit Siang has warned that the resurrected Umno-PAS Unity Government idea, in the wake of the incarceration of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim last Tuesday and the death of Tok Guru Nik Aziz two days later, is a plot to sow discord and distrust among Pakatan Rakyat (PR) allies and leaders with the agenda to divide and destroy the most formidable challenge the ruling coalition has ever had to face in its history.
“I call on all Pakatan Rakyat leaders and supporters to unite to save the Opposition Alliance,” said Lim, who is also DAP Parliamentary Leader and Gelang Patah MP.
He was speaking at the 2nd DAP SSS (Sympathy, Support and Solidarity) with Anwar Ibrahim ceramah at Han Chiang School Hall in Penang on Monday.
“Umno is staying out of the Chempaka by-election, left vacant by Nik Aziz’s passing, but going all out in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election if Anwar is stripped of the seat.”
He was citing the by-elections as an example of Umno/BN trying to drive a wedge between PR allies.
“This will be a revival of the plot by certain Umno schemers and strategists to promote the UG concept or ‘unity government’ of Umno and PAS, but which has not been able to make much headway to date because of the staunch and uncompromising opposition from Nik Aziz,” said Lim. “To these Umno schemers and strategists, the death of Nik Aziz brings new hope for their dormant ‘UG’ conspiracy.”
He confessed that he was very intrigued by what the promoters of the “UG government” really meant, “when it is obvious to all that there is no unity in Umno itself, with former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad going all out to topple Najib Abdul Razak as Umno President and Prime Minister of Malaysia”.
Still, he added, PR should not hide the fact that it is facing the greatest crisis since its formation seven years ago, and many are asking whether the Opposition Alliance can survive intact or will it disintegrate and disappear from the political arena.
