PAS ulama rejects Nurul Izzah as opposition leader
Calling for an experienced hand, ulama council man backs party chief Hadi
(Free Malaysia Today) – A leading ulama in PAS has rejected Anwar Ibrahim’s daughter Nurul Izzah, the MP for Lembah Pantai, as a possible choice to be the opposition’s leader to replace her father, now serving a five-year jail sentence for alleged sodomy.
The acting vice-chairman of the Islamist party’s powerful ulama council, Dr Mahfodz Mohamad said the position of opposition leader required someone who is experienced in politics.
He said that while young politicians have their place as leaders of their own parties, youth is not a criterion for choosing an opposition leader.
He supported the party’s information chief Mahfuz Omar’s suggestion that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang be nominated, Sinar Harian reported.
