Free Anwar rally organisers ditch stadium proposal for the streets
(The Malaysian Insider) – PKR Youth-led group #KitaLawan today rejected the police’s condition to hold in a stadium their March 7 rally in support of jailed opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The organisers decided this in a meeting at the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association building in the city centre earlier.
“We have decided that there will be no alternative venue. The rally will go on March 7 at the Sogo shopping centre at 4pm,” said Mandeep Singh, one of the #KitaLawan committee members.
“We will still ask the police for help on safety and traffic,” said Mandeep at a press conference after the meeting.
“We will have a medical team ready, and a legal team ready also like the previous events.”
Mandeep said the group felt that Sogo, in the heart of the capital and near public transportation hubs, was the easiest place for people to gather.
Batu MP Tian Chua who was also present said police should not make an issue of where people choose to gather.
“Citizens have a right to gather, it’s not for the police decide where we want to gather. The police’s job is to ensure the rally goes smoothly and that people are safe,” the PKR lawmaker said.
