DAP MP becomes sixth to be nabbed over pro-Anwar rallies

Teo Kok Seong

(Malay Malay Online) – DAP Socialist Youth chief Teo Kok Seong was arrested today for joining the #KitaLawan protest in support of jailed Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the latest in a crackdown against rally goers and organisers.

Canning assemblyman Wong Kah Woh said Teo, who is Rasah MP, was arrested under Section 143 of the Penal Code and Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).

“Statement yet to be taken and unsure whether he will be granted police bail,” Wong told Malay Mail Online.

The Perak DAP assemblyman said Teo was taken into custody at the Dang Wangi police station at 11.30am today, after he went there for his statement to be taken.

Previously, Teo’s PKR counterpart, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, was arrested and remanded for three days, also over the March 7 rally in Kuala Lumpur.

Others also arrested include PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli, Jingga 13 Fariz Musa and student activist Adam Adli. The latter two were arrested over a previous rally.

On March 7, thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Kuala Lumpur in support of Anwar, who was handed a five-year jail sentence last month for allegedly sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, in 2008.

Police previously issued a warning that the rally, headlined as #KitaLawan, was unlawful, as its organisers had failed to follow the conditions laid out in the Peaceful Assembly Act.
