Sever ties? Go ahead, Umno man tells MCA

(MKini) – Cheras Umno Division chief Syed Ali Alhabshee has scoffed at an MCA leader’s threat to sever ties with the ruling party over hudud law implementation in Kelantan, saying that MCA was free to do so.

“If MCA feels it is strong enough, there is nothing to stop them from severing ties with Umno which represents the majority of Malays.

“If they (MCA) have grown big-headed, go ahead (sever ties) but don’t try and incite other BN component parties,” he said in a blog posting Wednesday.

Former MCA vice-president Gan Peng Sieu (right) had urged MCA and other BN component parties to sever ties with Umno if the party’s MPs support the implementation of the hudud.

This is after Umno Kelantan assemblymen yesterday endorsed a bill proposed by PAS to update the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (II) Enactment 1993 which forms the basis of hudud law in the state.

The legislation is expected to be passed by the state assembly later today with bi-partisan support.

BN parties warned

After the bill is passed, further amendments to federal laws are needed to allow the implementation of hudud, thus bringing Parliament into picture.

Syed Ali said Umno is not cowed by MCA’s threats and the party as well as BN allies such as Gerakan or MIC, have no business interfering as it only concerns Muslims.
