Hadi now seen as Umno’s ‘Trojan horse’, says Guan Eng
(Malay Mail Online) – PAS’ Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang alleged betrayal of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) by tabling a private member’s bill on hudud has portrayed him as Umno’s “Trojan Horse” to dismantle the pact, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng warned today.
Lim also said the PAS president should not have joined PR if he had been honourable and honest in his intention to ultimately violate and defy the federal opposition coalition’s consensus against implementing hudud that he had personally agreed to.
“Is Hadi aware that he is now seen as a Trojan horse for Umno by helping to threaten the break-up of PR by destroying PR’s carefully built-up consensus since 2008, based on keeping one’s word, mutual trust and respect that had gained the majority support of 52 per cent of voters in the last general elections?” asked Lim in a statement.
Lim accused Hadi of twisting matters by asserting his democratic right to table the bill, insisting instead that the issue at hand is PR’s expectation of honesty and trust while dealing with him.
“If Hadi is honourable and honest about his intentions to surreptitiously pursue the implementation of hudud laws in violation and defiance of the PR consensus he himself had agreed to, then he should not have joined PR but go on his own,” the Bagan MP said.
Last week, the Kelantan state legislative assembly passed amendments to the Shariah Criminal Code (II) 1993 Enactment to pave the way for the controversial implementation of hudud laws in the state.
Hadi last week served notice to Parliament on the proposed Bill but de facto law minister Datuk Nancy Shukri said it may not make it into the order paper for the current session as there are many others on the schedule.
According to Lim, Hadi had betrayed PR’s consensus by not obtaining the consent of all three parties before implementing hudud under its Common Policy Framework.
“That was the reason why all top PAS leaders from 2008 until the 2013 general elections, including the late Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat, did not pursue the implementation of hudud laws because hudud was not in the list of PR priorities to restore freedom and justice, establish good governance and forge national unity among Malaysians,” said Lim.
He compared it to DAP’s move to push for local government elections in Penang, where the party had called allies PKR and PAS for discussions two years before PAS started to object against it.
Lim joined DAP MP Tony Pua who earlier warned that PAS is in danger of becoming an untrustworthy member of PR and by extension to Malaysians so long as Hadi remains its president.
Hadi had defended himself yesterday, claiming that there was no place for “betrayal” because DAP, via its adviser Lim Kit Siang had signed a joint statement in 2011 that “agreed to disagree” in the implementation of the hudud law.
