(FMT) – Sarawakians are alarmed at the prospect of hudud and the motion would declare that it would not be implemented in Sarawak.

The PKR Sarawak Leadership Council, taking a cue from the theme, Sarawakians First – a variation of the running theme Sarawak 4 Sarawakians – has resolved to write to Chief Minister Adenan Satem on moves by the Kelantan Government to introduce hudud law within its jurisdiction.

The letter, according to PKR Sarawak Chief Baru Bian, would propose the tabling of a joint motion on hudud in the coming Sarawak Assembly sitting. The motion, taking note of the fact that Sarawakians are alarmed at the prospect of hudud, would declare that it would not be implemented in Sarawak.

“In the event the CM was not minded to table the bipartisan motion in the House, our PKR Assemblymen will cause the motion to be tabled for deliberation and adoption by the Assembly,” said Baru who is also Pakatan Rakyat Sarawak Chief and Ba’ Kelalan Assemblyman.

Stating the case for the anti-hudud motion, Baru pointed out that Article 4 of the Federal Constitution declared: “This Constitution is the supreme law of the Federation”.

As explained by Raja Azlan Shah in 2003, he added: “This essential feature of the Federal Constitution ensures that the social contract between the various races of our country embodied in the independence Constitution of 1957 is safeguarded and forever ensures to the Malaysian people as a whole, for their benefit”.

Therefore, stressed Baru, the Federal Constitution and not the Syariah, is the supreme law of the Federation.
