PAS: DAP has fallen into BN’s political trap
(The Star) – In a fresh attack against DAP for opposing PAS’ hudud plans in Kelantan, Pasir Mas MP Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz says its Pakatan Rakyat ally has fallen into the trap of political rival Umno.
In a statement Saturday, the son of the late PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said DAP’s excuse to reject the Islamic penal code on the grounds of secularism was actually part of its effort to re-strengthen Umno’s secular ideology, which he said was now increasingly vulnerable.
“DAP has fallen into Umno and Barisan Nasional’s trap by opposing the people of Kelantan’s democratic right to the Islamic penal code.
“What they are doing now is just a way to reinforce Umno’s secular ideology,” he said.
Nik Abduh, who is also a PAS central committee member, said PAS would continue with its struggle to uphold Islam amidst the “persistent clash” between secularism and Islam as the country’s official religion.
“We will bring back Muslims to an original understanding of Islam, which is a way of life.
“Therefore, Islam as an official religion needs to be understood from the Islamic point of view, not from the western coloniser who misunderstood (Islam),” he said.
Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob had on March 18 tabled amendments to the Syariah Criminal Code II (1993) to enable the implementation of PAS’ hudud in Kelantan.
The Bill was unanimously passed, by all state assemblymen from PAS, Umno and PKR after a two-day debate, The PAS-led government is now attempting to get two Private Member’s Bills in Parliament to fully enforce hudud in Kelantan.
This prompted DAP to sever ties with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, whom it claimed had acted “dishonourably” by submitting a notice of Private Member’s Bills in Parliament without consulting his counterparts.
