Now, Mahfuz wants to link up Dr M, Sirul
(The Malaysian Insider) – PAS lawmaker Datuk Mahfuz Omar wants to arrange a telephone call between Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and murder convict Sirul Azhar Umar, following a meeting he arranged yesterday between Sirul’s mother and the former prime minister.
The Pokok Sena MP said the telephone call would allow Dr Mahathir to hear Sirul’s side of the story concerning the murder of Mongolian interpreter, Altantuya Shaaribuu.
“I believe that if I can arrange a telephone call with Sirul, Tun will agree to speak to him,” said Mahfuz, who is also the PAS information chief.
Dr Mahathir had recently called for the Altantuya case to be reopened to look into Sirul’s claims that he was acting under orders from superiors.
Mahfuz arranged a meeting yesterday between Sirul’s mother, Piah Samad, some of his other family members and Dr Mahathir at the former prime minister’s office in Putrajaya.
Sirul is currently being held at an Australian immigration detention centre after fleeing the country last year.
He left for Australia just before the Federal Court decided to uphold his conviction for murdering Altantuya.
Sirul’s detention in Australia has raised questions about the Altantuya case. Observers and lawyers have said that he and another colleague, Azilah Hadri, were only carrying out orders from their superiors.
