Undemocratic of Dr M to pressure Najib to resign
(Bernama) – The Terengganu Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club (BNBBC) is convinced former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad meant well when he criticised Prime Minister Najib Razak’s leadership, but said it was undemocratic of him to pressure Najib to resign.
The chairman of Terengganu BNBBC, Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar said members of the club held to the principle of supporting the leadership of the day, which is undivided support for Najib who is also the current Umno President.
“I agree with the other views that in a party like Umno which practices democracy, party members like Tun Mahathir had the right to voice out.
“But party members cannot impose or force their ideas to be accepted by the President if he does not accept their views because in the management of a strong organisation, the final decision is made by the President after considering the views of all parties.
“This is the concept used by BN and other component parties where the BN Chairman makes a decision and the component parties respect that decision,” he told Bernama today.
Wan Abdul Hakim was asked to comment on Mahathir’s postings in his blog which claimed that the people today had no faith in Najib’s leadership.
Mahathir also predicted that Umno and BN would lose in the 14th General Election as there were too many accusations made against Najib which he had not answered, including the murder of Mongolian, Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Wan Abdul Hakim, who is also Umno Terengganu Information Chief, said when Mahathir was Prime Minister, not all his decisions were agreed to by party members but they still abided and respected his decision as party president and the prime minister.
“Najib is PM on the basis of him being President of Umno and BN. If you really feel he is no longer suitable to be the PM for whatever reason, we leave it to the party members to make a decision during the Umno general elections.
“We have our ways and procedures. The Tun can offer to contest as President at that time…today the party president is Najib and he is the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and I reiterate that we are behind him,” he said.
