Save Umno, not yourself, Zam tells Najib
The results of the impending by-elections will indicate whether or not there’ll be a Malay tsunami in GE14, says the ex-minister
(Free Malaysia Today) – Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak must decide to save Umno and not himself and his wife if the results of the Rompin and Permatang Pauh by-elections are discouraging for Barisan Nasional, former information minister Zainuddin Maidin says in his latest blog posting.
Zainuddin says he fears that the pledges of support Najib has been receiving from Umno leaders may have given him a false sense of confidence in his ability to survive the attacks from former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and go on to lead Barisan Nasional to victory in the next general election.
On the contary, he says, it appears from his interaction with the public that there’s a serious erosion of public support for the Najib administration.
“I’d like to tell Najib in all sincerity that the rakyat’s confidence in him is at an extremely worrying level and this saddens me,” he writes.
“I see the possibility of a Malay tsunami against Barisan Nasional at the next general election.
“Perhaps, the results of the Rompin and Permatang Pauh by-elections can be used as an indicator of whether my information is right. If there’s a reduction in the number of votes for BN, Najib will have to seriously reconsider the goal of his political struggle. Is it to save himself and his wife or his party?
“I worry about Umno’s future, not Najib’s future. What a pity it is that the weaknesses of the opposition parties is not exploited to revive Umno’s and BN’s strength.
“I pray that the by-elections will not give an indication that there’ll be a Malay tsumami instead of a Chinese tsunami at the next general election. If there’s no such indication, Najib can continue in his leadership role, as is only right by democratic judgment.”
