(The Star) – Some 300 former PKR supporters and members have pledged their allegiance to the Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP).

The group represented by S. Saroja submitted their membership forms to MIUP president Senator Datuk K.S. Nallakaruppan in a simple ceremony at a house in Seberang Jaya here on Saturday.

All of them are residents of Taman Siakap, which falls under the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency.

Nallakaruppan, whose party is Barisan Nasional friendly, said the group used to be staunch supporters of PKR, and many were former PKR members.

“They joined MIUP because they felt neglected by PKR.

“They voted for PKR, who has been in control of this seat for the past 17 years. But they got nothing from them. Even complaints on clogged drains fell on death ears.

“These newly recruited members want a change,” he said during a press conference on Saturday night.

Lorry driver S. Muniswaran, 33, said PKR had never attended to their pleas.

“For example, we have been asking for two sets of canopies to be used for community functions, be it wedding or funeral.

“But we got no response from them. But during general elections, they will come and fish for votes,” said Muniswaran, who said he was a committee member of PKR’s Taman Siakap branch.
