Dr M dares critics to show proof of his wrongdoing
Dr Mahathir Mohamad remains defiant he did not abuse his premiership for personal benefit and still wants to know where 1MDB’s billions have disappeared to.
(Free Malaysia Today) – Taking on his critics, who have accused him of financial scandals during his premiership, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has simply asked both Zamil Ibrahim of KITA and Tunku Abdul Aziz, MACC Advisory Board chairman to show him the evidence.
Taking on Zamil first, Mahathir argued that neither of his sons were billionaires as alleged but admitted they borrowed millions in order to finance their respective businesses.
“I did not raise loans when I was PM to help my sons. If you have evidence, show it.”
He also said Petronas’ accounts were available for examination and that Zamil should help himself to it to “verify whether I lie or not.”
He said although Petronas had bought over his son’s ailing shipping business during the country’s financial crisis, it had later sold part of the fleet for a “handsome profit” when the economy recovered.
He compared this to the financial scandal of 1Malaysia Development Berhad and said, “RM14 billion to RM20 billion cannot be accounted for. Since the 1MDB advisor cannot explain where this money is, I must assume that it is somehow lost or stolen or misused.”
Mahathir then trained his guns on Tunku Aziz of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, who he said had tried to pin the BMF scandal on him because of a remark Lorraine Esme Othman, a key player in the case, had made about taking orders from “high above”.
“He assumes that ‘high above’ Lorraine was me. There are lots of people high above Lorraine. I will not name them here because I don’t like making inferences when I have no concrete evidence,” Mahathir wrote in his blog today.
