DAP leader pours scorn over ‘meaningless assurances’ by Najib after ministers break ranks
(Free Malaysia Today) – Lim Kit Siang has urged the prime minister, Najib Razak, to break his policy of silence after four Cabinet minister broke ranks and called for inquiries into the continuing controversy over 1Malaysia Development Bhd and its latest land deal with Tabung Haji.
The DAP parliamentary leader said Najib should explain his role in the “bailout fiasco” of the Tabung Haji-1MDB land deal, after yesterday’s announcement by Tabung Haji chairman Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahman that the pilgrims fund would sell off land bought from 1MDB, on the advice of the Prime Minister.
Najib should state whether he had approved or directed Tabung Haji’s decisions in the land deal, and if not who had given the approval and the reasons why.
Lim said the announced sale, to the highest of three bidders, had not ended the storm and stigma of possible criminal breach of trust of pilgrim funds. 1MDB had acquired federal land in the proposed Tun Razak Exchange financial district four years ago for less than RM64 per square feet and sold a 1.5 acre plot to Tabung Haji at RM2,773psf.
He said there had been a rising chorus of cries for the resignation of the chairman and four top executives; termination of the land deal; and the refund of Tabung Haji’s payment; and even for the resignation of the Prime Minister himself.
