Dr Wan Azizah set as opposition leader as DAP, PAS lay down arms
(MMO) – Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail looks set to be the next parliamentary opposition leader as the PKR president has received the backing of both DAP and PAS, whose leaders appear to have put their differences aside for now.
PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang said Pakatan Rakyat (PR), which was nearly torn apart by PAS and DAP’s hudud squabble, will officially discuss the opposition leader post when it convenes its next leadership council meeting some time before Parliament sits next Monday.
“PKR is honoured that our president enjoys the confidence of our coalition partners,” Chua told Malay Mail Online, confirming that PKR is selecting Dr Wan Azizah to replace her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as opposition leader.
Yesterday, PAS information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar confirmed that the Islamist party has agreed to back Dr Wan Azizah as opposition leader after DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang threw his support behind her.
DAP publicity chief Tony Pua also confirmed with Malay Mail Online yesterday that the secular party is endorsing Dr Wan Azizah as parliamentary opposition leader.
PAS’ Khalid Samad told Malay Mail Online that party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had said at the party’s central working committee meeting last Saturday that the parties who have the most number of seats should decide on the opposition leader post.
“We’ll accept the decision made between PKR and DAP because they’re the two parties with sufficient seats to decide.
“Even if we disagree, we won’t be able to change it. We don’t see any need to disagree anyway,” Khalid said.
