Changing PMs makes no difference without reforms, says Nurul Izzah
(Malay Mail Online) – Those demanding accountability from Putrajaya would be better served by calling for meaningful and structural reforms than seeking Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s resignation as prime minister, PKR MP Nurul Izzah Anwar said today.
The Lembah Pantai lawmaker said that a change of leadership would otherwise make no difference as the existing structure of government was fundamentally corrupt.
“Even if Najib is not the PM, I am still worried over our future. We need reformation, enough with Umno and BN.
“We must look at structural reform, we must look at replacing the current system. What we want is a full transformation so that we have new leaders not from Umno and BN,” she told reporters at a press conference at the PKR headquarters today.
Nurul Izzah pointed out that a similar change in 2003 when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad made way for Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi did not yield substantial changes, nor in 2009 when the latter was forced to resign and allow Najib to become prime minister.
In recent months, Najib has come under vitriolic attacks from former prime minister Dr Mahathir who is demanding his resignation over scandals surrounding Putrajaya such as 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and the 2006 murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, among others.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday said that Najib should remain in power as he was elected through proper channels.
His deputy, Mohamad Sabu, echoed this, but said Najib should dissolve the Parliament and call for fresh elections in the event that he chooses to exit.
