The Umno, PKR and PAS internal strife (part 29)

The main issue here is regarding Dr Mahathir’s allegation that 1MDB has ‘burned’ RM42 billion (see The Malaysian Insider news report below). Najib is being accused of ‘menghilangkan’ RM42 billion.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

In June 2006, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad launched his attack to bring down Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi by holding his maiden ceramah at the Kelab Century Paradise, now renamed Kelab K.

It took three years before Pak Lah would resign and hand power to Najib Tun Razak. Dr Mahathir himself admitted it would be very difficult to oust a Prime Minister unless the PM himself voluntarily resigns or resigns under pressure.

Last month, history was repeated when Dr Mahathir started his series of road shows to bring down Prime Minister Najib by holding his maiden ceramah, yet again, at the Kelab K.

Will it take another three years before the Prime Minister can be pressured into retiring, like what happened to Pak Lah, or will Najib do what Dr Mahathir himself did — hold on to power never mind how much they may attack him?

There are only two ways Najib can be ousted. One would be if someone challenges him for the Umno presidency in the party elections (and wins) and the other would be if Barisan Nasional loses the next general election. Then Najib would be history.

Of course, the third alternative would be to get at least 112 Members of Parliament to pass a vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister in Parliament.

Lim Kit Siang wants Najib to call for a vote of confidence in the next Parliament sitting to prove he still has the support of the majority. But why should Najib do that? He is the Umno President and Barisan Nasional Chairman. And Barisan Nasional controls 60% of the seats in Parliament. So this makes him the Prime Minister.

If Najib’s critics want to prove he no longer has the confidence of the majority in Parliament then they should attempt a vote of no confidence against him, not the Prime Minister who has to prove he still has support by calling for a vote of confidence.

It works on the doctrine of you who allege the crime must prove guilt and not I being accused of the crime must prove innocence. Malaysians, however, seem to have two standards. If the target is the opposition then you who allege must prove the allegation but if the target is the government then you being accused must prove innocence.

Anyway, Najib is under attack like no other Umno President and Prime Minister before this. However, Najib knows what happened to Pak Lah back in 2006 and he is making sure he avoids the mistakes that Pak Lah made that eventually led to him stepping down. There are many issues being used to attack Najib. The biggest and most damaging, of course, is the 1MDB issue.

So what is Najib going to do to fend off these attacks? Najib appears to be at a loss. He appears not able to respond to these attacks. Is Najib really stumped or is he just applying Sun Tzu’s art of war?

Know when to attack and when to wait. The essence of warfare is not attack but strategy. Know yourself and know your enemy even better. — Sun Tzu

Sun Tzu says that on the battlefield there are only two realities: win or lose. So there is no room for virtues or for using a gentleman’s strategy because there is no such thing as a glorious failure. Honour is an empty word to comfort the losers. And losers do not gain sympathy — they get killed, argued Sun Tzu.

The main issue here is regarding Dr Mahathir’s allegation that 1MDB has ‘burned’ RM42 billion (see The Malaysian Insider news report below). Najib is being accused of ‘menghilangkan’ RM42 billion.

So what Najib has done in response to this allegation is he has asked the PAC and the external auditors to look into the affairs of 1MDB and determine whether RM42 billion has really ‘hilang’ as Dr Mahathir alleges.

If the report next month proves that RM42 billion has not ‘hilang’ as alleged, then Najib can turn around and start counterattacking. He will be able to show evidence that the allegation that RM42 billion has ‘hilang’ is not true.

Najib just needs to keep at least 51% of the 222 Parliamentarians and 191 Umno divisions with him. If he can prove that RM42 billion has not ‘hilang’ then he can most likely do that. Then he would only have the next general election in 2018 to worry about. And if he can do what the Conservative Party of UK did recently — win at least 51% of the seats in Parliament — then he can remain Prime Minister until he is ready to retire.
