Despite pressing PM to go, Dr M says none good enough to take over
(Malay Mail Online) – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted today that there is nobody suitable to become the new prime minister, saying that Datuk Seri Najib Razak now holds too much power in office.
The veteran politician also mooted the creation of a “separate Cabinet” whose members are not appointed by the prime minister in order to keep the administration in check.
“There is no one,” Dr Mahathir said in reply to a question from the audience asking him who would be best-suited candidate for the prime minister’s post.
“We give too much power. When the prime minister abuses his power, we can’t say anything,” he added, relating an alleged instruction to ban university students from attending his speeches.
“We should have other Cabinet outside, which consists of people not appointed by the prime minister who should have some say in what he does,” Dr Mahathir said.
The former prime minister was taking part in a question-and-answer session at his Perdana Leadership Foundation here.
