Kit Siang: Pakatan may break up in two weeks time

(The Star) – Pakatan Rakyat is on the “brink of disintegration.” DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang says the opposition coalition of DAP, PKR and PAS may cease to exist in two weeks time.

“This is a most ludicrous political development,” said Lim in a blog post on Sunday.

He said a unity government between PAS and Umno may now succeed after being blocked by the late PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

“Former PAS leaders have gone on public record to assert that the unity government had the blessings of PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang but was blocked by the obstinate opposition of Nik Aziz,” he said.

He said he was shocked when he heard of Hadi’s recent claim that the proposal received the approval of Nik Aziz and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as well as the knowledge of DAP.

Lim was referring to a speech by Hadi last Tuesday where he claimed Nik Aziz and Anwar supported the idea of a unity government with Umno.

“DAP was never informed by Hadi of the idea,” he said.

“PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli have denied that Anwar ever agreed to the concept.

“Nik Aziz could not possibly have agreed or he would not have publicly reprimanded Nasharuddin in June 2009 and told him to quit as PAS deputy president and Bachok MP and join Umno if he persisted with the unity concept.

“It is in fact inconceivable for any PR party to agree to concept as it is predicated on a government of Malay political parties when PR is dedicated to the cause of all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or region,” said Lim.

Lim said the only way to “save Pakatan Rakyat from disintegration” would be to adopt an eight-year Pakatan Rakyat Roadmap.

He said the three component parties must commit to uphold the two fundamental principles – strict adherence to the PR Common Policy Framework and the operational principle of consensus regarding the Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council as the highest policy-making body for PR.

“If we stay loyal to these two fundamental principles, I am confident that PR will be able to grow from strength to strength to fulfill the hopes of generations of Malaysians for change and take PR to Putrajaya to form the new Malaysian government,” said Lim.
