Salleh: Reforms crucial to prevent a dictatorship
Salleh Said Keruak says reforms must result in greater checks and balances between the country’s various branches of government.
(Free Malaysia Today) – The various branches of government working independently of each other and providing the important function of checks and balances is what Malaysia needs when one talks about reform, Salleh Said Keruak said in his latest blog posting.
He said the many levels of checks and balances between the Executive, Legislative, Senate, Monarchy and Judiciary were crucial in preventing a “dictator from taking over the country”, something he noted had unfortunately changed in the late 1980s.
“The reforms that Malaysia needs are the restoration of the powers of the various branches of government so that there are better checks and balances.”
He said the case of Malaysia was a “unique” one because the country was neither a secular state nor an Islamic state.
“I would classify Malaysia as a parliament democracy with a constitutional monarchy and with Islam as the religion of the Federation.
“That is what the Federal Constitution says, anyway.”
He also detailed in his blog how the various branches of government checked each other so that no one branch had all the power to call the shots as they fancied.
