Dr M gets stinging attack from Terengganu Umno
The former PM is told he has no standing to question Najib and is reminded of scandals during his time.
(Free Malaysia Today) – Terengganu Umno today launched a diatribe against former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, questioning his right to tell Prime Minister Najib Razak to do his bidding and resurrecting memories of the financial scandals that occurred during his 22 years in power.
The attack was made by Terengganu Umno’s information chief, Wan Abdul Hakim Mokhtar, in a posting on a Facebook page that commemorates last Friday’s abortive Nothing2Hide forum.
He said there was no relevance to the question of whether or not Mahathir agreed with Najib’s policies.
“Tun M is no longer PM,” he said. “If he voices his disagreements, does it mean that Najib must bow to him in obedience? What mandate does Tun M have?
“In Umno, any member can voice his opinions. However, it is the President that makes the final decisions. And it is he who is responsible for the decisions. Just as Umno members must abide by the decisions Tun M made when he was president, he now must abide by the decisions of the current president.”
Responding to Mahathir’s allegations that Najib was responsible for the loss to the nation of billions of ringgit, Wan Abdul Hakim asked whether he had forgotten about the RM30 billion lost in the late 1990s through Bank Negara’s foray into the foreign currency market.
He reminded Mahathir that the RM30 billion came from the national reserves.
He also revisited the MAS scandal in which the government repurchased the privatised airline from Tajuddin Ramli at RM8 per share when the market value was RM3. Tajuddin was known to have a close relationship with the then finance minister, Daim Zainuddin.
“Wasn’t that a scandal involving billions of ringgit?” he asked. “Was it okay just because Tun M and Daim were involved? Or perhaps, it was because the public would not know about it since there were no social media sites then.”
