(The Malaysian Insider) – Democracy is a dangerous idea and leads to a game of “musical chairs”, says former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Speaking after a forum at the Cooler Lumpur Festival today, Dr Mahathir said democracy led to people pulling each other down and the country remaining stagnant.

“Someone becomes the prime minister and then people demonstrate and bring him down,” he said, citing recent events in Egypt.

“They were so stable during Hosni Mubarak’s time. And then they wanted democracy. Look what happened.”

He also said that being a politician is the best job in Malaysia because one does not need any qualifications to enter politics.

“I was just a banana fritters fryer and I went on to become prime minister,” he said during a conversational session called “Dangerous Ideas”.

He also said that being out of power after he retired as PM in 2003 made him very uncomfortable.

“I was so used to saying ‘do this’ and that thing is done,” he said.
