(Malay Mail Online) – PAS is ready to assist the Umno-led Terengganu government in its plans to implement hudud in the state, the Islamist party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said.

Hadi said the state government needs to explain the issues surrounding hudud to the public, including the non-Muslims, before it is presented at the next Terengganu state assembly sitting.

“PAS has 15 seats in the state assembly and all opposition representatives will give full support if the motion (on hudud) is presented for approval,” Berita Harian quoted Hadi as saying after a function in Kuala Berang, Terengganu, yesterday.

Hadi was responding to reports quoting Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman as saying that the state government had no problem implementing hudud provided the public, especially non-Muslims, understand the Islamic law.

“We agree with the views and opinion of the mentri besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman who has suggested providing an explanation on the concept of hudud especially to non-Muslims before it is implemented,” Hadi added, saying that PAS was willing to work with Barisan Nasional (BN) on issues of Islamic jurisprudence.

The thorny subject of hudud is one of the key causes of the on-going war between Pakatan Rakyat (PR) allies PAS and DAP, which has led to the latter party declaring the pact dead.

The declaration by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng followed PAS’s decision during its muktamar on June 6 to sever ties with its ally while still remaining in PR with PKR.
