Why must Muslims demand ‘respect’ during Ramadan?
(FMT) – Art called the act of instructing non-Muslims to respect the faith of Muslims especially during the holy month of Ramadan as stemming from a sense of self-pity.
The question as to why Muslims in the country demand to be “respected” by non-Muslims during the fasting month has been raised by Muslim lawyer cum human rights activist Azhar Harun.
Better known as Art Harun, he was commenting on the recent brouhaha that erupted in Alor Setar where non-Muslim primary school students were instructed not to drink in the presence of their Muslim friends fasting during Ramadan.
The teacher in question also said that non-Muslim kids could only drink in the toilet and made the situation even worse with an unsavoury joke about them feeling free to drink “their own urine” if they didn’t have any water with them.
In a Facebook posting, he asked his fellow Muslims: “Why is it that many Muslims in Mesia (Malaysia) nowadays demand to be ‘respected’ just because they are fasting?”
“Why the need to close school canteens during Ramadhan?”
“Why must non-Malay pupils be asked to drink behind closed doors and even in the toilet?”
Art dismissed the notion that the “urine” statement was a joke and asked a more pertinent question.
“I don’t care whether the minum-air-kencing statement was a joke. That misses the point.
“The point is why must non-Malays adjust their life to facilitate us, Muslims Melayoos (Melayu), to fast?”
