IGP: News portals may be summoned over 1MDB reports
(The Star) – Police may summon news portals The Edge and Sarawak Report over their articles on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic).
“We will call anybody for investigation if there is a necessity,” he said after attending the soft launch of the General Police and Special Equipment exhibition and Conference (GPEC) Asia 2015 here on Monday by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Fauzi.
Last week, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said The Edge and its owner Datuk Tong Kooi Ong must be held responsible for publishing inaccurate reports and false information on 1MDB based on articles it had obtained from Sarawak Report.
Dr Wan Junaidi said summoning the media could not be deemed as a move to clampdown on those reporting issues relating to 1MDB.
“I don’t think the Government has the power to really stop the media from speculating whatever they want.
“The Government is not going to crack down on the media … that is the promise made by the Government when we launched the Multimedia Super Corridor in 1993 and the policy still stands,” he said.
