A constitutional expert says forcing the PM to take a leave of absence will only plunge the country into further chaos.

(Free Malaysia Today) – If Prime Minister Najib Razak is to be replaced, it must be done through a vote of no confidence in Parliament and not by forcing him to step down, constitutional expert Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari said.

In an exclusive interview with The Rakyat Post, he explained that forcing the PM to step down would most likely lead to a total collapse of the government and added, “It is not a simple matter of the Deputy Prime Minister taking over from him as both the leaders do not seem to be seeing eye-to-eye on the issue of the investigations.”

He was referring to investigations by a special task force to ascertain if allegations by The Wall Street Journal that USD700 million from 1MDB-linked funds were channeled into the private bank accounts of the PM just before the country’s 13th General Election.

He said the proper way was to take the issue to Parliament, and explained, “A vote of no confidence must be taken in Parliament if the Prime Minister is to be replaced.

“After that, we would know if the successor is on the same page as Najib.”
