Clare’s reports ‘different from 1MDB files’
(Free Malaysia Today) – Minor but significant changes were made by Sarawak Report from the digital files of leaked 1MDB documents, according to Thai police quoted in news reports.
“The information contained in the documents that were published online appear to be different from the original digital copies retrieved from (arrested blackmail suspect Xavier) Justo’s personal computer,” Thai police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri was quoted as saying.
Prawut did not name either Sarawak Report or its editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown; however, his description matches that of the web site and Rewcastle-Brown.
Over the past months, Sarawak Report has produced extensive exclusive coverage on the affairs of 1Malaysia Development Bhd, a government-owned investment company, which it said were based on leaked company documents.
The reports have resulted in intense pressure on the prime minister, Najib Razak, to resign. The government has ordered an investigation of allegations made against the company, its RM42 billion in debts and its use of funds for investments.
NST Online had reported yesterday that “a news outfit based in London had tampered with classified documents”, quoting Prawut. The organisation was not named but Prawut said it belonged to “a Malaysia-born woman who moved to Britain”.
Rewcastle-Brown was born in Sarawak while her parents were serving there.
Prawut told Malaysiakini today that “the changes are small, but important”, when asked about the NST report that the documents had been tampered with.
He said the Thai police had made its deduction about the changes after interviewing former PetroSaudi International executive Xavier Justo, who had told them that only the original documents from PSI had been passed on to others.
Prawut was unable to provide further details about the alleged tampering as the matter was still under investigation, Malaysiakini reported.
