Police may arrest those named by Lester Melanyi, IGP says
(Malay Mail Online) – Police may arrest the individuals named by former Sarawak Tribune editor Lester Melanyi as embroiled in an alleged plot to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
Labelling Lester’s claims serious, the national police chief noted that his men have found that there are some individuals bent on overthrowing the government through undemocratic means.
Khalid said this after he was asked to comment on the statement issued by Publisher and Group CEO of The Edge Media Group Ho Kay Tat that the business daily had solid evidence to support claims that billions of ringgit had indeed been siphoned out of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and transferred into the personal accounts of certain individuals.
“I don’t want to comment about the investigation process of the (1MDB) task force. The investigation on 1MDB is being handled by them.
“But there is another investigation done by the PDRM, particularly about what was exposed by Lester Melanyi and the Thai Police because there are those who are attempting to overthrow the government through undemocratic means,” Khalid told reporters after attending the force’s event here.
“We have already recorded Lester’s statement and we are following up. We must investigate this thoroughly and seriously because we may arrest those involved,” he added.
Although he refused to comment on the matter, Khalid confirmed that his men had received the documents of the purported money trail from The Edge.
He also said police will use their own tech expert to look into the documents.
“They (The Edge) have their expert, we have ours. They will look at it their way, and us our way,” the police chief said.
Last week, Lester was seen in a video confession claiming of a convoluted conspiracy to unseat Najib by SR founder Clare Rewcastle-Brown and several opposition politicians.
According to the former journalist, SR had forged the documents it had used in its exposes on the 1MDB scandal.
PKR’s Rafizi Ramli, DAP’s Tony Pua, and Rewcastle-Brown who are among those named as complicit in the alleged plot have since rubbished Lester’s claims.
They said the allegations were clearly intended to divert attention from the 1MDB fiasco and silence those vocal in exposing the scandal.
