(The Star) – Lim Kit Siang has proclaimed that a new opposition coalition will carry the torch for a new Malaysia when a new political party emerges from Gerekan Harapan Baru (GHB) in a few weeks time.

He said the country needed a new Islamic political party that was all-embracing and could unite all Malaysians regardless of their background.

“This will be another milestone in the political history of Malaysia, for the formation of a new inclusive and open-minded Islamist political party will mark the culmination in the realignment of political forces in the country and the advent of a new political coalition to replace Pakatan Rakyat – whether Pakatan Rakyat Baru, Pakatan Rakyat 2.0 or any other name to be decided – to carry the torch for a Malaysia Baru,” he said in a speech at a Gerakan Harapan Baru rally at Pontian, Johor on Thursday.

The DAP national adviser said that while Pakatan Rakyat is dead, the hopes and aspirations of Malaysians for political change was not.

He added that the aspirations for change have been brought to life with the great public support for GHB.

He said that he was informed by GHB pro-tem committee chairman Mohamad Sabu that a new political party will emerge in the next few weeks.

GHB was formed by the so-called progressive faction from PAS, who saw themselves ousted at the party polls in June.

Lim said that Malaysians must think of how to save Malaysia from becoming a failed state even before the 14th General Election.

“This is why despite our political differences, I am prepared to work with Tun Mahathir and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin,” he said.
