MACC’s Shukri arrives home under heavy security
(TMI) – The number two in charge of Malaysia’s anti-graft agency, Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull, was under heavy security upon his arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) tonight following rumours that he would be picked up by police.
Shukri was surrounded by at least six bodyguards in uniform and plain-clothed officers from the Malaysia Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) as he walked past the media who had been waiting since 8pm to interview him upon his arrival from a 10-day working visit to the United States.
The deputy commissioner in charge of operations declined to give a press conference, telling the media he would instead speak later as the situation was “not safe”.
“Thank you for coming. I will see you guys later… it is not safe… There’s so many things I need to settle first,” he said.
Shukri arrived at 9.40pm and was met by MACC deputy chief commissioner (prevention) Datuk Mustafar Ali and minister in charge of governance and integrity Datuk Paul Low at the VIP lounge in KLIA. The three spent about 10 minutes talking.
Shukri returns to Malaysia amid uncertainty over the state of affairs at the anti-graft agency, which has had seven of its officers questioned by police over alleged leaks of official information on a probe into debt-ridden state investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Police are investigating the leak of such information as well as of a purported draft charge sheet against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak which was published on whistleblower site Sarawak Report.
