Minister says although free to conduct investigations, it is still illegal for the anti-corruption agency to leak classified information to the public.

(Free Malaysia Today) – Minister of Tourism and Culture Nazri Aziz said that although the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was free to carry out their duties, they were still not above the law.

Speaking at a press conference outside the National Museum today, he said that it was against the law to leak classified information to the public.

“They are free to investigate any alleged corruption cases, but if secrets from the investigations fall into the hands of the public and there are elements of toppling the ruling government, then it is against the law and action can be taken,” he said.

He explained that “even the police” was not spared, and added, “If the police abuse their powers, then they will have to be subjected to the law as well.”

Former MACC advisor Rashpal Singh and Attorney-General’s Chambers officer Jessica Gurmeet Kaur as well as MACC deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Sazilee Abdul Khairi were arrested by the police on August 1 to assist in the investigation of a leaked charge sheet made out against Prime Minister Najib Razak.
