Muhyiddin claims Najib said would tell Gani Patail to explain RM2.6b

(Malay Mail Online) – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today claimed he was told by Datuk Seri Najib Razak that the latter would instruct then Attorney-General Tan Sri Gani Patail to explain a report that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) had been deposited in the prime minister’s accounts.

Speaking to delegates in the Kemaman Umno meeting today, the former deputy prime minister said that he was “shocked” when he read the Wall Street Journal’s report about the amount last month.

“I texted the prime minister saying this was a serious allegation and that he needed to explain so that no one can make such allegations,” he was quoted as saying by news portal Malaysiakini.

“He replied ‘Thank you’ and that he would instruct the then AG to clear the air.”

Last month, Chief Secretary Tan Sri Ali Hamsa announced that Abdul Gani’s service as AG ended effective July 27 due to health reasons, but the latter claimed to be unaware of the development.

Prior to his removal, Abdul Gani had provided legal advice to a multi-agency taskforce probing the state-owned firm 1MDB.

Muhyiddin was also removed as deputy prime minister in a Cabinet reshuffle the same day.

Najib also said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has cleared him by categorising the funds as a donation from the Middle East.
