MCMC issues notice to news portal over two articles

(Bernama) – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a notice to news portal Malaysiakini to take down two articles which were found to be not true from its website.

The articles titled “Reports filed against Chief Sec, PSD Head” and “Laporan terhadap KSN, Ketua Pengarah JPA” were published on Thursday.

“MCMC found the news in both articles to be untrue as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied its officers had lodged reports against the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Public Service director-general, under Section 48 of the MACC Act 2009,” MCMC said in a statement on Friday.

The commission reminded news portals to be more responsible and check the accuracy of news before uploading them.

It also stressed that the act of sending false content via website applications is an offence under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

It provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a maximum of one year’s jail or both upon conviction.
