‘Don’t insinuate – I’ll be watching,’ AG warns
Apandi says Prime Minister does not have a hand in the 1MDB probe
(Free Malaysia Today) – Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali today warned the press not to insinuate any impropriety on his part in the conduct of his office, reports Malaysiakini.
Riled by a question as to whether his appointment was to cover up allegations of corruption against Prime Minister Najib Razak, Apandi retorted, “Don’t try to insinuate anything against me. I give a warning to everybody. All right? Be careful. I will be watching.”
He added that Prime Minister Najib Razak did not have a hand in how the Attorney-General’s Chambers conducted its investigations, including in matters related to 1MDB.
“We are independent,” he told Malaysiakini. “We will decide according to the laws.”
He added that his chambers was still in the midst of reviewing the 1MDB investigation papers prepared by Bank Negara Malaysia, having only received them last Thursday, the very day that Bank Negara Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz told the press that her agency had completed its investigations and handed over all papers to Apandi’s chambers.
“We are still studying the papers. I have no comment,” Apandi was quoted as saying.
Apandi’s appointment as Attorney-General on July 28 created a furore because it involved the premature removal of his predecessor Abdul Gani Patail, purportedly on medical grounds. Gani at the time claimed that he had no knowledge that he was being removed.
