It’s official: PAS to stay out of Bersih rallies
But representatives will be sent to show support for the democratic struggle, says Sec-Gen Takiyuddin
(Free Malaysia Today) – PAS has officially declared that it would not mobilise its members for the Bersih 4 rallies, confirming an earlier statement made by party president Abdul Hadi Awang.
The party’s website, Harakah Daily, reported today that Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan had released an official statement to the effect.
Takiyuddin said PAS needed to commit its resources to preparations for a “major” programme, billed as People’s Congress, scheduled for September 12, and an assembly planned for October 17 with an expected attendance of 60,000 members.
He said the September 12 event, which would involve political parties, NGOs and the general public, was aimed at dealing with current issues and finding solutions for them.
He also said PAS felt that the dates for the Bersih rallies – August 29 and 30 – were “not suitable,” considering that the nation would be celebrating National Day on August 31.
