(Malay Mail Online) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak could be made to suffer electoral defeat if voters in his long-held Pekan seat were told to turn against him, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested today.

Dr Mahathir, a former prime minister turned outspoken critic of Najib, said the latter’s defeat would not mean the end of the Barisan Nasional coalition’s grip on power.

“We want BN to win, we want Najib to lose. We should go together to Pekan and ask the people of Pekan to go down and not vote (for him).

“If we can do so, good,” the 90-year-old told thousands here who had gathered to hear him speak on the nation’s directions.

The BN-led government would still stand even if Najib’s administration falls as the ruling coalition still has the necessary parliamentary majority, he said.

Dr Mahathir was responding to a question from the floor from a staunch supporter of BN and Umno, who wanted advice on how to vote in the next general elections as she was at the same time against backing Najib.

Najib has been Pekan MP for almost 40 years since 1976 after the seat was vacant following the death of his father, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, who was then prime minister.
