Dr M disgruntled because no Umno support, minister says

(Malay Mail Online) – A senior Umno minister today said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be left to go about his business as he is merely “disgruntled” and an “old man”, amid the former prime minister’s concerted efforts to depose current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz claimed that the only reason why Dr Mahathir chose to attend last weekend’s Bersih 4 rally was because the latter could no longer find support within Umno.

“Whatever he does, let it be. He’s an old man what. This man, he’s disgruntled suddenly he realised no one listens to him, he tried to do undemocratic things in the party and there’s no reaction,” Nazri said at a news conference here.

“He’s a bit disgruntled because the party is behind Najib and so am I. I’m 100 per cent behind Najib,” he added.

Nazri said there was nothing wrong with Dr Mahathir attending Bersih 4 as he did not cause a ruckus at the peaceful assembly.

“If he wants to join Bersih, that’s fine. I don’t see Mahathir throwing bombs and breaking things he want to jalan jalan (walk around) then let him,” he said.

Nazri noted that Dr Mahathir is being investigated by the police because the latter could have said something seditious while at the rally, and not due to his actual attendance.

“I understand that he was called because he said things that could be considered seditious.

“But if he was called for walking and demonstrating, there’s no point for that,” he said.

Dr Mahathir made an unprecedented appearance at the Bersih 4 rally over the weekend in a show of support for the call for Najib’s resignation, though the former prime minister had openly said that he did not care about the other demands made by Bersih 2.0.

Dr Mahathir has been Najib’s biggest critic over the latter’s handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, and even went so far as to accuse Najib of bribing Umno leaders. In response to Dr Mahathir’s calling for a vote of no confidence against Najib, Nazri previously told Malay Mail Online that the proposal is doomed to fail because the system currently does not allow a no-confidence vote against an individual.

The former de facto law minister also said that BN’s chief whip ― Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ― will not allow such a move to take place and will ensure all BN MPs toe the line.
