MACC shocked over DPP’s disappearance
(The Star) – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) hopes that no one speculates about the reasons behind the disappearance of deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais.
“The MACC is shocked with the news of Morais’ disappearance and hopes he will be found safely as soon as possible. We hope his family will be patient while the police work to find him,” said MACC investigations division director Datuk Azam Baki.
In a statement issued on Sunday evening, Azam said that Morais had handled many high-profile cases and was currently handling several cases involving the agency.
“I knew Morais well from serving with him in the MACC, and hope all parties are praying for his safety,” added Azam.
It was reported that a burnt Proton Perdana car, the same make as the one used by Morais, was found in Hutan Melintang on Saturday.
Morais has not been seen since he left his Menara Duta home for work on Friday morning.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said it was too early to confirm if the burnt car had any connection to the DPP’s disappearance.
“All I can say is we found a car. Perak police are investigating it as arson. We are unable to check the chassis number or the registration plate because the car was badly burnt,” he said.
Morais, previously seconded to the MACC, left his house at 9am heading towards Putrajaya in a grey Government-issued Proton Perdana bearing the registration number WA6264Q.
It is learnt that a friend tried contacting Morais at about 10.30am, and later at 3pm, but was unable to reach him on both occasions.
The friend tried calling his office and was informed by Morais’ secretary that he did not turn up for work that day.
A source said that Morais had worked with the agency for about eight years before returning to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
During his time at the MACC, he brought papers on corruption investigations to court.
The source said Morais was not involved in the investigations into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
