Only Speaker can decide on no-confidence motion
(Bernama) – Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia said he will decide on whether to allow a motion for a vote of no-confidence against the Prime Minister if and when it is put before him.
He stressed that only the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat could accept or reject a motion.
“No minister, not even the prime minister, can reject a motion. Only the speaker has the power,” he told reporters after opening a meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly here today.
Asked if there was a motion of no-confidence against Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, he said: “When did Parliament have a session?” (The Dewan Rakyat is on a break and will only reconvene on October 19.)
As for what his decision would be, he said: “I will cross the bridge when I come to it.”
Opposition leaders are reported to be calling for a vote of no-confidence against Najib in the next parliamentary sitting.
