Najib: Aljazeera film shows they’re out to get me
Prime Minister says new Altantuya allegation points to collusion with international conspiracy
(Free Malaysia Today) – Umno president Najib Razak has lamented that renewed allegations against him in relation to the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder were part of a conspiracy to oust him from office.
The allegations arose in a dramatised documentary aired by the Aljazeera news channel on Wednesday.
Najib questioned the time of the broadcast, coming at a time when he has been facing pressure from former premier Mahathir Mohamad and opposition politicians to resign because of the affairs of government investment arm 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Speaking to Umno delegates in his constituency here, Najib said the timing of the broadcast suggested international collusion with conspirators attempting to remove him as prime minister, according to media reports.
Aljazeera said there had been SMS messages extracted from the phone of convicted killer Sirul Azhar Umar showing that he had attempted to blackmail Najib for money in return for silence on Najib’s involvement with Altantuya, whose murder in 2006 was linked to the Malaysian Navy’s purchase of two French-built submarines.
However, news reports quoted Najib as saying: “There are no photographs, there is no evidence and there are no SMSes, and it has emerged again”, and that the film was an indication of a conspiracy against him.
“This case has already sank for so many years and now it floats again. This issue was raised again these couple of days, but I have said before that I never met this woman, I had sworn on it in the mosque,” he said. “There’s no proof whatsoever yet the allegation keeps surfacing, it’s as though there’s a conspiracy both domestically and overseas.”
