(Bernama) – The new Parti Amanah Negara formed by breakaway PAS members expects to attract more than 100,000 members, including those from PAS to join the party by the end of the year.

PAN president Mohamad Sabu said so far, the party had received overwhelming response from various political parties in the country.

“We have been distributing PAN membership application forms nationwide and expect the number to rise until the end of this year.

“PAN received 500 membership applications from people in Malacca, including PAS members, while in Johor, there were 5,000 membership applications. In Kedah, PAN received 2,721 applications,” he told reporters after launching the Malacca branch of the party on Saturday.

While launching the party in Temerloh (Pahang) earlier, Mohamad Sabu reiterated the positive outlook for the party, saying encouraging feedback from west coast states had fuelled its belief of achieving the targeted number of members.

Pahang PAN chairman Dr Hamzah Jaafar and Semantan state assemblyman Syed Hamid Syed Muhammad were also present during the launch.

At the launch, Syed Hamid announced that he had ceased to be PAS member as he had officially joined PAN, but said the new party would continue to cooperate with other parties, including PAS and Pakatan Rakyat.

Parti Amanah was formed by taking over the former Workers’ Party and has registered its new name with the Registrar of Societies. The party is expected to be launched on Sept 16, Malaysia Day.
