IGP says probing Al-Jazeera for bad journalism in Altantuya murder case

IGP

(Malay Mail Online) – Doha-based broadcaster Al-Jazeera, which ran a controversial documentary on the 2006 high-profile murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu last week, is under investigation for attempting to “cook up” new evidence, the country’s top policeman said today.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar accused the Qatari news organisation of bad journalism in trying to resurrect an old story that had already been judged in Malaysia’s highest court.

“Because Al-Jazeera, you are basing your report on hearsay. You’re just trying to cook up something from nothing, listening to people, which is not true.

“You are trying to plant new evidence inside a case which has been decided by the courts which has never come out before, which is not good journalism.

“Whatever it is we are commencing our investigation on Al-Jazeera,” he said to an Al-Jazeera reporter, who was present during a press conference on the International Maritime Bureau International Meeting on Global Piracy, Armed Robbery and Maritime Security here.
