(The Malaysian Insider) – Former Umno leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan has been barred from leaving Malaysia, after lodging police reports against troubled 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) in several different countries.

Khairuddin told The Malaysian Insider that the police had directed the Immigration Department to prevent him from leaving Malaysia.

“That’s right, I’ve been barred from leaving the country by the Immigration Department on the orders of Bukit Aman,” the former Batu Kawan Umno division vice-head said through Whatsapp.

Khairuddin said he had planned to leave for New York and London this morning and had already paid for his trip in advance.

“The Immigration Department and the police did not notify me of this at all!

“All the preparations, buying plane tickets and the accommodation in New York and London, have gone to waste because now I’m not allowed to leave the country without reasonable grounds,” he wrote in a separate statement.

Khairuddin said his lawyer, Matthias Chang, a former aide to Tun Dr Mahahir Mohamad, faced similar travel restrictions.

He said Bukit Aman merely informed the Immigration Department that he was barred for “specific reasons”.

“The Bukit Aman police only informed the Immigration Department that the restriction was imposed on me for specific reasons.”
