Umno Youth men join attack on PAC and Pua
Call for disbandment of Public Accounts Committee, after 1MDB’s personal attack on PJ Utara MP
(Free Malaysia Today) – Two members of the Umno Youth leadership have joined the attack on parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua (pic), a member of the committee and also a leading critic of government investment arm 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
One member of the Umno Youth executive committee called for the committee to be disbanded and new members appointed. Another Umno Youth leader called for police action against Pua in connection with a purported conspiracy to “topple” the government.
Their attacks came after 1MDB in a statement earlier today had launched a second successive personal attack on Pua for his repeated demands for answers about billions in 1MDB payments that its Abu Dhabi partner had reportedly claimed had gone missing.
The claims were reported by the Wall Street Journal, which said Abu Dhabi officials were investigating purported payments by 1MDB of US$1.4 billion and US$900 million, which were not recorded on the books of state-owned International Petroleum Investment Company.
Pua has repeatedly demanded answers from 1MDB, and called today for a fresh audit of 1MDB’s books “to account for every sen” and to ensure that no money had been embezzled.
1MDB today ignored his questions and instead attacked Pua for staying silent about the Wall Street Journal’s claim that it had used information from parliamentary hearings.
Later today Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah said in a statement that the police and anti-corruption agency should investigate every PAC member about “the sale of confidential information”.
