Najib receives ICT award in New York

(The Star) – Malaysia will continue to develop a skilled ICT savvy society supported by a strong ICT industry.

This continuous effort – which is the thrust of the 11th Malaysia Development Plan launched in May – and past achievements have earned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak the “ICT in Sustainable Development Award”.

The award was presented by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at a gala dinner at the United Nations on Saturday night.

Najib in his acceptance speech here said that digital inclusion was vital and that was why the 11th Malaysia Plan was people-centric.

ITU secretary-general Houlin Zhao, in his speech, said the award was to recognise the “extraordinary support of global leaders and their unique contribution to ICT development”.

Heads of states and governments from Gabon, Rwanda, South Africa, Uruguay, Bangladesh and Thailand were among those honoured.
