DAP does a U-turn on suing Pahang mufti
Pahang DAP chief insists Hari Raya Haji sermon was mischievous, but says he wants a ‘civil discussion’ of the matter for now
(Free Malaysia After considering advice from lawyers, Islamic scholars and his colleagues, Pahang DAP Chairman Tengku Zulpuri Shah has decided against being hasty in suing the Pahang Mufti and the Religious Affairs Department (JAIP) over a sermon on Hari Raya Haji.
At a press conference today, Tengku Zulpuri said he would instead meet the mufti, Abdul Rahman Osman, for a discussion on the matter.
“We’re hoping to have a civil discussion with the Pahang Mufti next week or as soon as possible,” he said.
It was reported that the mufti, in his sermon, said that DAP was a clear and open enemy of Islam.
Tengku Zulpuri reacted by demanding a retraction and threatening legal action unless an apology was forthcoming. Abdul Rahman replied that neither he nor JAIP would apologise. He said it was DAP that should apologise for demanding a retraction and an apology.
Tengku Zulpuri said his latest decision should not be interpreted as a retraction of his intention to take legal action. He said he felt it was better for now to try to settle the issue in a face-to-face meeting.
